B-Vitamins for Functional Beverages: B3, B5, B6 and B12 Compared
Share
B-vitamins are the backbone of the functional beverage category. Energy drinks, vitamin waters, and wellness shots all rely on them for both function and label appeal. But not all B-vitamins behave the same way in liquid. Here is a practical comparison for formulators.
Niacin (Vitamin B3)
Niacin supports energy metabolism and is a staple of energy drink formulas. Two considerations matter for formulators:
- Form: nicotinic acid can cause skin flushing at higher doses; niacinamide does not. Check which form fits your positioning.
- Stability: excellent — niacin is among the most heat- and light-stable B-vitamins.
Typical beverage dose: 2–16 mg per serving. Shop bulk niacin.
Calcium Pantothenate (Vitamin B5)
Pantothenic acid contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and reduction of fatigue. The calcium salt form (calcium pantothenate) is the standard for beverages because it is far more stable than free pantothenic acid.
Typical dose: 2–10 mg per serving. Highly water-soluble, neutral taste. Shop calcium pantothenate.
Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6)
B6 supports protein metabolism and reduction of tiredness. Pyridoxine hydrochloride is the go-to form: soluble, stable in acidic beverages, and inexpensive. Note that B6 is light-sensitive — opaque packaging or cans protect potency better than clear bottles.
Typical dose: 0.5–2 mg per serving. Shop pyridoxine.
Vitamin B12: Cyanocobalamin vs Methylcobalamin
B12 is the highest-recognition vitamin on an energy drink label. Two forms dominate:
- Cyanocobalamin: the synthetic standard. Most stable form in liquids, lowest cost, decades of use. The default choice for most beverages. Shop cyanocobalamin.
- Methylcobalamin: the "active" form, popular in premium and natural positioning. Less stable to light and heat than cyanocobalamin — best in opaque packaging with cold-fill processes. Available as 1% dilution (easier to dose accurately) or pure form.
Typical dose: 1–6 mcg per serving (often much higher in energy shots). Because doses are tiny, a 1% triturated form greatly improves dosing accuracy in production.
Formulation Tips
- Add vitamins after thermal processing when possible, or overage by 10–30% to compensate for losses.
- B2 (riboflavin) tints beverages yellow — plan your color system around it.
- Group vitamins in a single premix step for batch consistency.
