Whey Protein Isolate vs Concentrate: Which to Buy in Bulk
PublishedShare
Whey protein isolate (WPI) is filtered further than whey protein concentrate (WPC). It contains 90% protein or more on a dry basis, against roughly 34 to 80% for concentrate, and has much less fat and lactose. Concentrate is cheaper per kilogram. Isolate usually costs less per gram of protein than people expect, mixes thinner and has a cleaner, milder taste. This guide compares the two and shows how to calculate the real cost of a bulk bag.
How Isolate and Concentrate Are Made
Both start as liquid whey, the by-product of cheese making. The whey is filtered through membranes that hold back protein and let water, lactose and minerals pass through. Stopping the process early gives concentrate. The most common grade is WPC 80, at about 80% protein. Filtering further, or adding a microfiltration or ion-exchange step, gives isolate, which by industry definition reaches at least 90% protein on a dry basis. A third form, hydrolysate, is protein that has been partly broken down with enzymes. It is more bitter and more expensive, and is mostly used in specialised formulas.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Concentrate (WPC 80) | Isolate (WPI) | |
|---|---|---|
| Protein (dry basis) | about 80% | 90% or more |
| Lactose | typically a few percent | typically about 1% or less |
| Fat | higher | very low |
| Texture in water | creamier, thicker | thinner, clearer |
| Taste unflavoured | milky | milder, cleaner |
| Price per kg | lower | higher |
Typical values vary by supplier and lot. The exact protein assay of the lot you receive is on its Certificate of Analysis.
Compare Price per Gram of Protein, Not per Kilogram
A kilogram of concentrate at 80% protein contains about 800 g of protein. A kilogram of isolate at 90% contains about 900 g. To compare them fairly, divide the price per kilogram by the grams of protein it contains:
Cost per 100 g of protein = price per kg ÷ protein grams per kg × 100
The gap between the two is therefore smaller than the sticker price suggests. Buying a larger format narrows it further, because the price per kilogram drops as the bag size increases. Live per-format prices are on the Whey Protein Isolate product page.
Servings per Bulk Bag
A typical scoop of protein powder is about 30 g. At that size:
- 1 kg: about 33 scoops
- 5 kg: about 166 scoops
- 10 kg: about 333 scoops
- 25 kg: about 833 scoops
Lactose and Milk Allergy: An Important Difference
Isolate is often chosen by people who want less lactose, because most of it is filtered out. But isolate is still a milk protein. It is not suitable for anyone with a milk allergy, because the allergy is a reaction to the proteins themselves, not to lactose. In Canada, milk is a priority allergen that must be declared on food labels (see the CFIA allergen labelling requirements). If you use WPI in a product you sell, the label must declare milk.
Using Unflavoured Isolate
- Shakes: shake 30 g into 250 to 300 ml of cold water or milk. Unflavoured isolate is neutral enough to take cocoa, coffee, fruit or a sweetener of your choice.
- Baking and cooking: heat changes the structure of whey protein, which is why protein pancakes and muffins turn out denser. Replace no more than about a quarter to a third of the flour, and add a little extra liquid.
- Blends: isolate is the usual protein base for home-made post-workout mixes. It is often paired with creatine monohydrate, L-leucine or L-glutamine. See our guide on bulk creatine monohydrate.
Storage
Keep whey protein in a sealed bag or airtight container in a cool, dry place. Moisture causes clumping and shortens its life, and heat speeds up flavour changes. For a large bag, decant a few weeks of supply into a smaller container so the main bag is opened as little as possible.
Which One Should You Buy?
Choose isolate if you want the most protein per gram, less lactose, a thinner texture or a neutral base for flavouring. Choose concentrate if lowest price per kilogram matters most and lactose is not a concern.
